This is how we could summarize the food awareness campaign in which the Health Surveillance and Promotion Service and the Food Hygiene and Nutrition Service of the Umbria 2 Local Health Authority also participate, joining the “World Week for the Reduction of Salt Consumption” which takes place held from 13 to 19 May. As always, the Italian Society of Human Nutrition (Sinu) collaborates with Wassh, coordinating the campaign for Italy, which this year highlights the value of the Mediterranean diet in facilitating the reduction of salt consumption. «Excess salt in the diet, which often starts from weaning, is particularly harmful – explain the experts of the Umbria 2 Local Health Authority – as it induces a progressive increase in blood pressure from the first years of life and favors the development of hypertension in adulthood”.

Epidemiological studies conducted in approximately 200 countries on all continents have reported salt abuse as the dietary error most responsible for premature deaths and disability related to the development of chronic non-communicable diseases (heart attack, stroke, arterial hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases). -vascular). «Most of the foods we consume – say experts – have an excessive amount of salt, especially processed and highly processed ones». Participation in the communication and awareness campaign contributed to the personalization and dissemination of information material both within the Umbria 2 local health authority and at the level of the Umbrian population through various channels.
