In the United States, however, both President Biden and numerous other politicians had reacted negatively and forcefully to the verdict, stating that it suggested “a false symmetry between Israel, a country responding to a brutal terrorist attack, and Hamas, whose goal is ‘eradication of Israel’. And Biden’s first reaction was precisely to hypothesize sanctions against the Court and its representatives. A reaction that, however, after a few days – following George Clooney’s phone call? – has eased, and in fact the White House spokesperson declared that sanctions against the International Criminal Court are not “the right answer”, and that the president will work with Congress on “other avenues” to address the “excess” of the Court. What is certain is that next Saturday, the 15th, the actor will participate in a big party in Los Angeles to raise funds for the Biden campaign. The actress Julia Roberts, the very popular talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, and the two former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton will also be present at the party. The intersection between the Democratic Party and the world of Hollywood is well known, so much so that Biden’s rival, Donald Trump, always struggles to find celebrities to participate in his rallies. But among Hollywood VIPs, Clooney and his wife Amal are the most politically active and their support is little less than indispensable for a politician who wants to maintain credibility on that front.
