18 thousand avoidable hospital admissions every year in Basilicata

According to a Fadoi survey, the lack of communication between doctors contributes to waste

A survey conducted by the Federation of hospital internal medicine doctors finds that in Basilicata 18 thousand hospitalizations per year could be avoided by improving communication between specialists and general practitioners.

According to a recent survey by the Federation of hospital internal medicine doctors (Fadoi), every year in Basilicata there are around 18 thousand hospital admissions considered avoidable, a third of the total, causing a waste of resources estimated at 54 million euros. These data emerge from the annual study conducted in healthcare facilities in the region.

The main problem identified concerns poor communication between hospital doctors and family doctors, as well as the improper use of the emergency room and the failure to update health records. The survey highlights a clear separation between hospital and community care, suggesting greater integration.

To solve these problems, 67% of the interns interviewed believe it is necessary to have a legislative provision that clearly outlines the role and methods of collaboration between health professionals at a local level. Furthermore, 33% would like clearer rules on the relationship between hospitals and local healthcare facilities.

During the survey, it emerged that only 33% of Lucanian doctors regularly update the patient’s electronic file and 83% of hospital workers rarely consult family doctors, while 17% never do so.

Giuseppe Nicoletti, president of Fadoi Basilicata, underlined the importance of improving communication to reduce unnecessary hospitalizations and contain costs. He also announced that the next regional FADOI congress will be held in Matera on 7 and 8 June.
