One-way alternating with intelligent traffic lights: the Cna solution for via della Loggia

ANCONA – «A solution for via della Loggia it must be found quickly and we believe it is necessary to continue with the proposal agreed upon years ago: a one-way traffic lights with the installation of intelligent traffic lights». This is the position of CNA of Ancona in reference to one of the city traffic hubs. «The street repaving project had an already agreed path to find a solution to the difficulty of coexistence between pedestrians and road traffic: that of installing intelligent traffic lights which would have allowed the establishment of a one-way system interrupted only for brief moments when the heavy vehicles (which could not take the new route) would have turned back. This would have been possible thanks to the fact that the traffic light placed in the direction of the port (for vehicles coming from Lungomare Vanvitelli) would have recognized heavy vehicles and would have allowed transit in the opposite direction (temporarily blocking traffic coming from Piazza della Repubblica). Now it would seem that this solution is being called into question.”

The CNA of Ancona reiterates its position in favor of the one-way system, motivating it with more points in favor. «First of all, it is clear that the street, also due to the presence of important artistic works, requires a solution that allows walking without danger. Two-way traffic narrows the road too much and puts pedestrians in danger. The intelligent traffic lights solution had already been shared when we began the process of restructuring the street. Furthermore, the administration has already invested in the traffic light system and now the risk is of throwing away funds already invested. The one-way guarantees vehicle access to the cathedral for both cars and heavy vehicles thanks to the vehicle recognition solution.”

Second Andrea Cantori, secretary of the CNA of Ancona, «in via della Loggia we have now gone too far to turn back. Changing on the fly can be counterproductive and nullify all the efforts that have been made to make a street that is a treasure chest of art more welcoming. Via della Loggia, in fact, is the main entrance to the historic city. A business card that must be made safe for pedestrians. In our opinion, having reached this point, it would be more logical to start with a timed experimentation, given that the traffic light system has already been installed, to verify its functioning and whether there are “side effects””.
