Viterbo – We receive and publish – The establishment of an archaeological-naturalistic park that includes the Etruscan necropolises of Norchia, Castel d’Asso and Grotta Porcina: this is the theme that will be debated in a conference promoted by the Archeotuscia and Salviamo Norchia associations, scheduled for Thursday 9 May 2024 at 3.30 pm in Viterbo, in the “Aldo Perugi” Auditorium of the Valle Faul Cultural Center.

The necropolis of Norchia, with its monumental rock tombs built between the 4th and 2nd centuries BC which climb onto the banks of the streams along which the city was built, is of great historical-artistic value; that of Castel d’Asso, the most important in Upper Lazio, is located in the heart of Etruria and is adjacent to the ancient Etruscan town of Axia, a few kilometers from today’s Viterbo; the Etruscan mound of Grotta Porcina, in the municipality of Vetralla, is one of the few Etruscan places that present rock architecture of extraordinary majesty. The mound of princely workmanship, the only example of this kind, is known locally as the “Great Wheel” thanks to its diameter of 28 metres.

These three sites of extraordinary importance, according to the organizers of the conference, should become part of a single large archaeological-naturalistic park, aimed at the care and protection of the precious monuments they contain, as well as their enjoyment by the public through equipped and documented routes .

The event, chaired by Luciano Proietti, president of Archeotuscia and Roberto Oriolesi, president of Salviamo Norchia, will be opened by the screening of a video created by Project Tuscia. Among others, interventions are expected from Margherita Eichberg, superintendent of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the province of Viterbo and southern Etruria; Professor Vincent Jolivet, archaeologist and director of research at the University of Paris, Felice Orlandini, deputy commissioner of the State Police and honorary inspector of the Ministry of Culture; Antonio Degiovanni, assistant in the implementation of the Vulci Park; Loredana Vitiello, author of the “Norchia” project; Pierluigi Congedo, professor of European Private Law at LUISS in Rome. The conference was concluded by the president of the Province of Viterbo Alessandro Romoli.
