De Luca: “The naturalistic route in the archaeological park of ancient Liternum in Giugliano has been presented”

“We presented the nature trail inside the archaeological park of ancient Liternum in Giugliano in Campania. This is a work financed with European funds from the Campania Region as part of the Integrated Sustainable City Program for a total amount of over 2 million euros. In the point with the press on the sidelines of the initiative, we also talked about other issues that concern this territory, such as video surveillance to combat fires”, says Vincenzo De Luca, president of the Campania Region.

After the delivery, last March 17, of the equipped and redeveloped urban green area, the naturalistic path among the remains of the ancient Liternum was inaugurated, still within the Integrated Sustainable City Program PICS – City of Giugliano in Campania. an amount of approximately 2 million euros, communicates the Campania Region.

The project to enhance the archaeological area of ​​Liternum involved the archaeological site corresponding to the ancient Maritime Colony of Liternum founded by the Romans in Campania in 194 BC. Liternum is famous for having welcomed Scipio Africanus who retreated there into exile after the campaigns against Hannibal, until his death in 183 BC. C. The flourishing period of Liternum was when the Emperor Domitian opened the “via Domitiana” to connect Rome with Naples in 95 AD crossing Sinuessa, Volturnum, Liternum, Cuma and Puteolis in Campania.

The redevelopment involved a large area of ​​approximately 67 thousand m2 through the implementation of an environmental reclamation and recovery intervention with the restoration of the biological diversity that develops in a harmonious and coherent way within the pre-existing archaeological remains.

The arrangement and valorization intervention transformed the archaeological site of Liternum into:

– Archaeo-naturalistic oasis with a strong scenographic impact that will be able to attract a varied audience both in terms of age, social position and scientific-cultural-sporting interest,
– Public garden for residents and non-residents,
– Educational path for school groups,
– Fitness trail along the lake,
– Attractor of Archaeological and Naturalistic Tourism.
