MESSINA – It is called “Together for Life” and is an initiative organized by the Irccs Bonino Pulejo, in collaboration with the Italian Association of Catastrophe Medicine, for the Reggio Calabria, Messina-Milazzo, Catania and Catanzaro sections of the Association Italian People with Down Syndrome. There will be 15 young people with Down syndrome who will participate in the course from 10am at the Piedmont hospital and learn the BLSD, Basic Life Support and Defibrillation techniques.

“This is a life-saving course – says the mayor Federico Basile -. There is the Municipality’s logo, not because we just want to be there, but because we want to be alongside these initiatives. There is no desire for a conference, but we want to demonstrate that the Municipality is there and that by working together with partners who know what to do we can reach citizenship. These initiatives must be done and proposed again.”

The general director of the Irccs Bonino-Pulejo Maurizio Lanza then thanked: “It is an exceptional synergy to convey a message of fundamental importance, because we are not just talking about the course but about attention to these issues. The IRCCS has been working on this for some time. These Blsd courses serve to save human lives and this is already enough to understand the social value. We are experts, we have already done over 40 courses, but this time we are addressing people with fragility externally, and we want to send a message: the fragile person must be integrated more and more. We need to raise awareness on the issues of inclusion, we must set the bar higher and higher.”

“Initiatives in which the person with disabilities is the protagonist are also fundamental for changing at a cultural level and breaking down stereotypes – adds the guarantor Tiziana De Maria -. People with disabilities are often seen as someone to take care of. The idea must be different: people with disabilities have the right to live a full life and the message that a person with Down syndrome can save a life is fundamental.”
