At the next round on 8 and 9 June, students away from home for the first time will be able to vote in the cities where they live, but only for the European elections. Applications due May 5th. A possibility denied, however, to workers far from their residence

REGGIO EMILIA – On 8 and 9 June, for the first time, non-resident students will be able to vote remotely from the municipalities in which they live, without having to undertake a long and often expensive journey to return home and vote at their polling station residence. The possibility, however, only concerns the European Championships.

You have until May 5th to ask your municipality of residence to be able to vote away from home. To submit the application you must fill out a form provided by the Ministry of the Interior. This is a possibility recently introduced by the Government and which will be available for the first time next June. But be careful, it only concerns European elections and only affects off-site students, not workers. It’s a step forward – comments the University Union of Unimore – but more needs to be done.

Even to participate in the European vote the path is not exactly easy: the student from Puglia or Calabria domiciled in Reggio, just to give an example, to vote for the candidates for the Strasbourg parliament will still have to go to Bologna where a unique special polling station will be set up in the region . The University Union calls for an acceleration towards electronic voting. Among the complaints about the novelty on out-of-office voting, there is also that of poor communication.
