CAROVIGNO – In the Dentice castle of Frasso di Carovigno, during an event open to schools, the commemoration ceremony of the bicentenary of the birth of Salvatore Morelli, deputy of the Italian Kingdom in the X and XII legislature and fervent supporter of the civil and political rights of women. The event, promoted by the Le Colonne association, involved the second classes of the Cavallo and Morelli institutes and the students of the Cpia institute of Carovigno, with the aim of making people understand how Morelli’s thought is still relevant. Among the topics addressed by the students there were also those of women who have distinguished themselves in professions traditionally considered male.

Salvatore Morelli also promoted a law for the abolition of domestic slavery and the extension of rights to women, including the right to vote. These themes were the subject of discussion during the event, starting from the experiences of young students from Carovigno who studied human value and the struggles for rights conducted by their fellow citizen almost two centuries ago.

Loredana Capone has announced that a room in the Regional Council Building will soon be named after Morelli, at the request of regional councilor Alessandro Leoci. Capone stressed the importance of Morelli’s bills, which took a century to pass, and highlighted the challenges still present in ensuring gender equality, such as wage inequality.

Alessandro Leoci expressed his satisfaction with the dedication and hoped that it could inspire new generations. Mayor Lanzilotti also expressed pride in Morelli, underlining the relevance of the issues he addressed and the importance of transmitting his ethical and moral heritage to future generations.
