Rita Capraro, doctor of the Trani emergency room, and Paolo Saracino, colleague of the medical guard, were sentenced to one year in prison at the end of the trial on the death of Antonia Abbatangelo, the 41-year-old from Trani who died at the Dimiccoli hospital in Barletta on 19 November 2020 due to Covid complications. This was reported by La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno.

The woman, mother of a child, suffered from obesity and was accompanied to the first aid point in Trani due to the unavailability of the 118 service in already critical conditions. The doctor on duty, without examining her, told her to contact the medical guard who then sent her back to the emergency room. The 41-year-old was forced to return home, without having received a swab or any diagnosis, even though she was already showing obvious signs of cyanosis. According to what has been reconstructed, the doctors “unduly refused” to take charge of the patient. The two are charged with omission of official duties. The family members, who were made civil parties in the trial celebrated with an abbreviated procedure, will be compensated.
