The first auction of the year for Bisceglie cherries

The cherry season in Bisceglie started on Sunday 28 April with the inauguration of the market in via Padre Kolbe. This year, the first auction took place a week earlier than the previous year. Just over 5 quintals of cherries of the Bigarreau and Early Lory varieties were delivered to the market, with fruit of good consistency and decent quality.

The starting price was 6 euros for Bigarreau cherries and 5.50 euros for Sweat Early cherries. All the conferred lots were purchased at auction by a single company, Bontà & Salute srl. Other varieties such as Rita, Sweat Early, Giorgia, Ferrovia and others are expected in the coming days.

Mayor Angelantonio Angarano participated in the auction managed by Girolamo Zingarelli to express his best wishes to the traders present for a good cherry season. He declared: “Congratulations to everyone because today it really takes a lot of courage to do agriculture, due to the climate challenge, the water problem and many of those problems. But you know it better than me, for us agriculture is something innate that we have in our DNA, as well as being the largest component of the GDP, an economic factor of the city of Bisceglie and this territory.

So thank you for the work you do, thank you for keeping your fields, your land in order and therefore for the work you do on the protection of the connected environment, even absolutely agricultural. It’s difficult, however, when we see the process, the heart takes precedence over reason and therefore we postpone the discussion on the problems that we then have to face, with the consortia, with structures that now have to protect the producers because otherwise we can’t go anywhere alone part.

The fact of creating a market that is traditional to us confirms that we simply want to be together, we want to work together, but let’s say we face the problems together. Then now we have to enjoy this product and hope that this season, despite this whole situation, can bring benefits to you, to your families to repay the work they did to put up with you while you were out, in the countryside and obviously in this territory. So thank you all. Happy cherry campaign.”
