Descriptive text here

There is a wait for the formalization of Prime Minister Meloni’s entry into the field at the European elections in June. His running would represent an added value and a lever of credibility for our country within the community institution. The goal of the conservatives must be to break the bond between socialists and popular. Work on common defense and foreign policy. Interview with the FdI deputy, Sara Kelany

04/25/2024

The wait is a lot. The people of Fratelli d’Italia are officially waiting for the leader to take the field Giorgia Meloni, at the European Championships in June. In the meantime, “we focus on the contents”, reasons the deputy and head of the Immigration department of FdI Sarah Kelany in his interview with Formiche.net presenting the Pescara event – Italy changes Europe – which will be held starting tomorrow.

Kelany, what do you expect from these three days?

Contents, ideas and proposals. It will be a very rich convention: over twenty debates organized which have as their common thread the relationship between our country and the EU. It is a programmatic conference: we at Fratelli d’Italia are used, unlike others, to talking about contents and proposals. Which will then form the basis of our political offer for the European elections.

How do you evaluate a hypothetical entry into the field by Prime Minister Meloni?

It would be an added value. The Prime Minister embodies our ideals and our values. If he were to decide to accept this candidacy, it would be a gesture of great generosity towards the people of Fratelli d’Italia. And I am sure that the conservative world – at a European level – would benefit from it.

Some believe that by running for office, the Prime Minister would shirk his commitment.

This is a completely unfounded position. Meloni has never shied away from her responsibilities and I am sure that she will not do so in the future either. Indeed, in my opinion her candidacy would be a way of measuring her approval among the electorate. An act of great courage and political responsibility.

What do you think will be the role of the ECR in the next European governance?

The wind in Europe has changed a lot in recent years. I think that the conservative proposal is gaining more and more traction because voters – in many countries of the Union – are tired of this bureaucratic giant but political dwarf and want to reverse the paradigm by making the EU a political giant and a bureaucratic dwarf. In this reversal of trend lies the fundamental role of the ECR which will hopefully also result in the breaking of the partnership between the Popolari and the Socialists.

Even Fabrizio Tatarella, precisely in these columns presenting his latest book, supports the need to establish an axis between the EPP and the ECR. On what basis?

It seems to me that all the cards are in order to pursue this plan. The common battles must focus in particular on the construction, finally, of a common defense strategy and a common foreign policy. We must work for a Europe in which the States, in accordance with the principle of subsidiarity, are nevertheless protagonists.

In your opinion, has Italy acquired greater importance in foreign policy since the establishment of this government?

We have become an essential interlocutor. Counting more within the Union means better protecting the interests of our country and our people. And this is why Meloni’s candidacy can only be good for Italy. We must succeed in shifting the axis of European governance towards a conservative sensitivity. And this is why, in my opinion, Ecr will play a decisive role.
