“He wanted to make evidence of corruption disappear”

The investigations have brought to light a shadow of corruption in the municipal administration of Avellino, with the mayor Gianluca Festa at the center of serious accusations. Investigators sent him behind bars alleging that he had tried to hide evidence of his alleged wrongdoings.

The evidence presented by investigators is strong: images captured last month in the mayor’s office show him working to disappear his computer, which, it should be noted, is the property of the municipality. For this specific episode, Festa is charged with the crime of embezzlement.

According to what is reported in the precautionary custody order, the audio and video interceptions carried out in the mayor’s office show a personal computer “constantly used for daily tasks”. However, later images reveal the mayor unsuccessfully trying to open the computer case, apparently with the intent of removing parts of the hardware, using improvised tools. Not succeeding in his aim, Festa places the computer inside a black box, which is then taken out of the office with the help of a municipal employee named Guido, as confirmed by the testimonies.

Investigators were unable to recover the computer, and the mayor denied having one in his office, a claim “blatantly disproven” by evidence gathered during the investigation.

According to investigators, the attempt to make the computer disappear was clearly aimed at removing the files contained therein from the attention of the authorities. An action considered an attempt to conceal evidence of alleged criminal conduct, which led to charges of embezzlement against Mayor Festa.

Ansa reports it.
