Palermo, Carta meets NY professional community for Reinventing Cities Italpress news agency

PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – Palermo and New York are both participating in the fourth edition of Reinventing Cities, the international competition dedicated to urban regeneration promoted by C40 to accelerate the decarbonisation and resilience of cities through the participation of multidisciplinary creative teams (architects, planners, developers , investors, environmentalists, creative project owners, start-ups, academics and community groups). In order to encourage the participation of the respective professional communities, a meeting took place today between the Councilor for Urban Regeneration of the Municipality of Palermo, Maurizio Carta, and Alessandro Melis, Professor of Architecture and Inaugural Endowed Chair of the New York Institute of Technology, for an exchange of ideas and proposals on the respective urban regeneration hypotheses linked to the principles of C40. In particular, Councilor Carta illustrated, in the presence of Trudy Brens, chair of Architecture, the dossier of the site of the former Chimica Arenella and the related tender, in order to stimulate the interest of the professional community of architects and urban planners as well as of international investors capable of responding with capacity to the challenges posed by the tender and to the ambitions of the Municipality of Palermo for the rebirth of a precious site. Participation in an international competition is important to put Palermo back on the world stage of the most sustainable, creative, supportive and intelligent cities. Participation in Reinventing Cities, together with cities like New York, will allow us to equip ourselves not only with authoritative project ideas but also to explore the market to verify the financial sustainability of the proposals, to test the availability of suitable implementers and to evaluate the best management options . The era of great project ideas without certainty of realization and, above all, without efficient management and maintenance of the works is over. The objective is to create in the area of the former Chimica Arenella an urban regeneration process, with low environmental impact and a high rate of innovation, also of social and cultural value, to be implemented through an intervention of partial recovery and partial replacement of the the existing urban building fabric also with proximity facilities for the neighbourhood. The site, due to its characteristics, aims to accommodate various functions, including tourist accommodation facilities, sports and leisure facilities, cultural activities, activities for craftsmanship, social and educational services and activities and any other function compatible with the value of the area, and in line with the design principles and sustainability criteria defined by the tender. The meeting focused on the availability of the School of Architecture and Design of the Nyit, chaired by Maria Perbellini, and the research group of Professor Melis, an internationally renowned expert in the field of sustainable architecture and ecological transition, to compete with proposals planning, also involving the fertile student community of New York Tech. We also discussed the need for the proposals, to respond to the guiding principles of C40, to have the characteristics of incrementality and flexibility necessary to activate an exaptation process, of which Alessandro Melis is the leading expert. The two parties confirmed their mutual willingness to promote the opportunities of the Palermo and New York sites nominated for Reinventing Cities to their respective professional, entrepreneurial and financial communities.(ITALPRESS).
