The seminar entitled “War from the sky. The bombings in Emilia-Romagna 1943”.

The initiative is promoted by the National Association of Civil War Victims (a moral body responsible by law in Italy for the representation and protection of civilian victims of war), together with Liberation Route Italia (a European network that promotes the places of the Second World War world), in collaboration with the Municipality of Rimini, the Gambalunga Library and the Institute for the History of the Resistance and the Contemporary Age of the Province of Rimini, with the patronage of the Emilia-Romagna Legislative Assembly and the Ministry of Education and of Merit Regional School Office for Emilia-Romagna.

The organizers take stock by investigating studies on an important topic for the Emilia-Romagna region: aerial bombings during the Second World War. Almost the entire territory was affected: from Rimini to Piacenza, the largest cities were marked by bombs dropped by the allies to liberate the country from the German occupier and the fascists. Each place has cultivated its own history and memory.

For the eightieth anniversary of these destructions, ANVCG and Liberation Route Italia have therefore decided to focus on a regional level, bringing together researchers and bodies that have dealt with various aspects regarding the topic. The morning will be dedicated to the military reasons for the bombings and the consequences on civilians. The influence of this period on republican history will also be investigated. To these general themes, in-depth studies will be added on the displaced people and on the Rimini area particularly affected by the phenomenon.

In the afternoon, the historical and scientific representatives of some regional projects will speak, who told their communities of reference about the bombings, from Reggio Emilia to Rimini, from Bologna to Modena, passing through the United Kingdom for a reflection on the point of view that emerges from the archives English.

The organizers’ greetings were brought by the national president of ANVCG, Michele Vigne, together with the general secretary Roberto Serio and, for LRE Italia, the scientific manager Mirco Carrattieri. For the institutional greetings, the president of the Emilia-Romagna Legislative Assembly, Emma Petitti, will speak, for the Municipality of Rimini, the councilor for Peace Policies and International Cooperation Francesca Mattei and for the ISREC the president Oriana Maroni.

Participation in the seminar is free and open to all, with priority for school teachers, within the limit of available places. Teachers can register via the SOFIA ministerial portal by 1 May 2024. Other interested people can instead send an email to the organizational secretariat: [email protected]

Participation in the whole day provides for the issue of a certificate of attendance valid as a training and refresher activity for teachers on duty at the school only.
