Modena, 30 April 2024 – ”We didn’t want to kill him . We were attacked and we tried to defend ourselves.”
They released spontaneous statements, telling their version of events, i two brothers Moroccans aged 28 and 50 accused of having compatriot Jaouad Dejli, 37, was killedwho bled to death after being stabbed in the groin last Friday morning in Castelnuovo Rangonein the courtyard of a building in via Casette Zanasi.
Yesterday morning, in fact, thevalidation hearing in prison: the arrest was not validated, since the risk of escape was not considered to exist but precautionary custody in prison was still applied. For the Judge – without prejudice to the results of the autopsy findings – the statement put forward by the public prosecutor can be considered correct by the State: it would be voluntary homicide.
The judge recognized the serious indications of guilt against the two brothers – gathered following meticulous investigations by the police – as well as the confession.
“The judge decided not to validate the arrest as per our request and at least from this point of view the decision on one side leaves us satisfied – states the lawyer Roberto Ghini, who represents the two suspects together with the lawyers Giulia Galvani, for the brother younger and Giulia Testa, for the older of the two – We note that for the judge it is correct reconstruction of the public prosecutor but, with due caution, refer to medico-legal assessments. The central problem is to establish whether it was an act supported by the desire to kill or, as we believe, an unintentional act.”
The brothers, who knew the victimthey explained that Jaouad Dejli had arrived on site on Friday morning ‘agitated’, with ‘stormy’ intentions.
According to the two suspects, in fact, the man had torn down a road sign with his car and then tried to hit them after the two had gone out into the street.
“He was shouting, he was throwing stones under the windows – the two explained – he threw the stones at us”.
The smaller of the two, the 28-year-old then pulled out the kitchen knife which he kept in his sleeve and then hit the victim, according to him to defend himself from the attack.
Jaouad staggered a few steps towards the road, and then fell to the ground in a pool of blood.
“We didn’t want to kill him – the brothers reiterated – We didn’t even know we had killed him.”
The 28-year-old, in fact, explained that he had not left the scene of the fatal attack. (He was immediately handcuffed by the soldiers who intervened).
The 50-year-old instead underlined that he immediately went back, after initially walking away, unaware of the death of his acquaintance.
The slash has severed the femur and for the victim, when help arrived, there was nothing left to do.
It seems that they are at the origin of the crime old disagreements between the threerelated to drug dealing and a debt relating to the purchase of drugs.
The police investigations, however, are still ongoing.
The crime has shocked the community of Castelnuovo Rangone.
Mayor Massimo Paradisi, right from the start, he ensured collaboration with the police, also to view the footage from the cameras.
And after the second stabbing in 36 hours he asked the prefect to increase the presence in the area,
