PESCARA. A citadel of politics overlooking the sea, 2,750 square meters large, including the VIP area for ministers and national party leaders. It is the headquarters of Fratelli d’Italia under construction on the free beach behind the Nave di Cascella for the party’s programmatic conference from 26 to 28 April: the FdI logos with the words “Italy changes Europe” are already in show. And they will remain in the center of Pescara until May 5, the day on which the authorization issued by the State Property Agency expires.
The permit for the demonstration with the big names in national politics, requested by Roberto Carlo Mele, concerns 5 tensile structures: main area (60 by 30 metres), debate area (20 by 15), press area (15 by 25), VIP area (15 by 15) and a glass structure for press accreditations (15 by 15). «The installation of the works in question», states the authorization signed by the director of the State Property Agency Cleto Giansante, “does not appear to be prejudicial.” On the beach in the center there will also be 12 chemical toilets, generators covering 36 square metres, two 4 by 4 meter “container-type warehouses” and three maxi totems, all surrounded by barriers.
For almost a month, with the municipal and European elections scheduled for 8 and 9 June, the FdI logo will stand tall in the heart of the city. And while the party is pressing the deadline to welcome the administrators leaving the League and close the list, another controversy breaks out: «We will verify every act of this procedure, but we believe it unlikely that the main square of Pescara could be occupied in this way in electoral propaganda purposes”, says the PD group leader Piero Giampietro. «If Pescara hosts a national event it is good news», says Giampietro, «but there are adequate spaces, less adequate spaces and prohibited spaces. Occupying the maritime state property for a month and, specifically, the most prestigious free beach in the city by setting up a shed complete with a party symbol, a few weeks before the municipal and European elections, is at the limits of legitimacy as well as beyond any sense of public use of state property. These days”, continues the PD councilor, “no one from Pescara could enjoy a sunbed or deckchair because the regional ordinance prohibits it; no one from Pescara can organize an event on the beach because the regulations prohibit it; but can the governing party occupy public property for a month for electoral propaganda initiatives? The free beaches, heritage of the unavailable state property of the State, must be used for tourist accommodation purposes and not for electoral propaganda of a party, even”, he concludes, “for a month”.
