Road chaos in the historic centre: the Municipality is looking for solutions – L’Aquila

THE EAGLE. “We will propose a series of meetings between the municipal police and the firefighters to avoid unpleasant episodes like the one that happened the other evening.” This is what the municipal police councilor says Laura Cucchiarella, in an attempt to extinguish the controversy raised following what happened on Saturday evening, when a fire brigade vehicle failed to reach a pizzeria in Piazza Duomo, where the fire alarm had gone off. To prevent the passage of the vehicle, some cars parked wildly. So the firefighters were forced to reach the pizzeria on foot.
THE WILD STAY
The problem is that, at night, the historic center risks turning into a sort of island without rules. “The municipal police are there,” says the councilor. «The police are on duty until midnight, all it takes is a report and the tow truck arrives. Of course, it takes some time. When the Municipality publishes an ordinance it also sends it to the police, it will probably be appropriate to organize a series of meetings to identify the access routes in the various areas with a plan that takes into account the construction sites that are opening and closing”.
PLANTERS AND CAMERAS
Many streets in the center are closed by flower boxes, necessary to contain cars but which represent a problem for the passage of larger vehicles. «We will do as in all other cities», explains the councilor, «instead of flower boxes we will put cameras connected to the municipal police command». The problem only concerns larger vehicles, because ASM vehicles currently pass through the planters regularly. Another problem is the presence of dehors and outdoor tables. «We will have to review the Municipality’s regulations», admits Cucchiarella.
CONSTRUCTION SITE AND MORE CONSTRUCTION SITE
After a period of stasis, numerous construction sites which had remained blocked for a long time have opened.
Added to these were those for the redevelopments of Piazza Duomo, Piazza Palazzo, Piazza del Teatro, Piazza Chiarino, with inconvenience for operators, residents and also for those who have to guarantee safety. And if we add to this the reappearance of the “red zones”, for residents it is all a slalom between construction sites and one-way streets that change from one day to the next.
THERE IS THE RISK OF CHAOS
It already happened two days ago, when to allow the assembly of a crane, via Signorini Corsi was closed while the direction of travel of via Fortebraccio was changed. Which created a chaotic situation, with cars going up ignoring the signs and others going down.
POLITICS AND TRADE UNION
An urgent meeting of the second commission on traffic problems in the historic center was requested by the opposition city councilor Paolo Romano, according to which «some decisions are creating multiple problems for those who live and work in the centre. And we”, he adds, “cannot afford not to address them on the merits and definitively”. USIF, the financiers’ trade union organization, also intervenes on the issue, calling for a review of the emergency system in the centre. «In addition to the fireman, 2 of our student marshals also intervened in the fire at the Peperoncino pizzeria, and this prevented the worst. We understand the temporary inconveniences caused by the resurfacing but safety comes first and must be guaranteed at all costs.”
