Dafter 7 years, for the eighth edition the Nerd Festival lands in the city center of Foggia and opens up to contamination with citizens and urban spaces.
All the staff, consisting of Rocco Scotellaro, Francesca Capone, Stefano Santangelo, Alessia Paragone and the others, this morning with the mayor Maria Aida Episcopo and the Councilor for Culture Alice Amatore presented the initiative which will be held on 4 and 5 May. For the first time, the municipal administration sponsored the event with a financial commitment, including an expense of up to 20 thousand euros in the budget to support the organization and the concerts.
The Nerd Festival is the first comics fair in Foggia, Puglia, a point of reference for fans of comics, books, video games, cosplay and streamers. The event aims to become one of the most important Comics & Games fairs in Italy and is an integral part of REFF (Italian Network of Comics Fairs).
The cartoonist will be the author of the poster and special guest of the 2024 Nerd Festival Luca Maresca, among the three official designers of Spiderman. With him the name with strong appeal will be the singer Cristina D’Avena who will perform for all fans and not, in the space dedicated to her in Piazza Giordano.
“We wanted to give a breath to culture in Foggia. The comics sector is a consolidated cultural reality, this initiative attracted many visitors and participants from all over Italy. There are around 70 comics festivals spread across the country and the comics industry involves young and old. There are 9 million readers and I am convinced that it will be a celebration for the whole city”, said Amatore.
The mayor is enthusiastic. “I was addicted to Mickey Mouse until I was 30, I couldn’t go to sleep without having read a few pages of Mickey Mouse, Cristina D’Avena is a transversal singer, for us ageees and for the kids. It’s not a niche issue but an intergenerational one.”
Stefano Santangelo from C. is very clearNerd eggwho suffered attacks from the council oppositions in the commissions, due to his past as a candidate in the five-star list for the Municipality of Foggia.
“This administration is focusing on the cultural excellence of our city, I hope that this initiative of ours brings back some beauty. We believe so much in the strength of people, the event will cost a lot and we will launch a crowdfounding to give more and more content to the city”.
20 cartoonists will arrive, many YouTubers and as the cartoonist, illustrator and teacher Giuseppe Guida, artistic director, explained, the festival has an important appeal outside Puglia.
Francesca Capone of the Magna Capitana Library is responsible for organizing the festival’s activities: “A portion of the narrative room is dedicated to comics, which is a cultural medium. We have invited highly respected artists such as Alessio Fortunati Katia Centomo with whom we will present a group of comics in collaboration with Unifg”.
There will be no shortage of thematic sections such as the one dedicated to the painter Easher, while the Douglas publishing house will arrive from Naples with a designer nominated for the Spaccanapoli Comicon. Many entertainment activities at the pedestrian area with the Imperiales Federici Secondo. “The program is packed and our wrists are shaking, bringing it inside the city is a great challenge”.
That Nerd Festival it would be without one Cosplay competition? For those who like to take on the role of their favorite heroes, the stage is designed to try to win the prizes up for grabs with the appointment scheduled for Sunday 05 May, 4pm. “Let’s get the message across, they are artists because they take on the appearance of the characters, there is a crazy amount of work behind the culture and beauty”. Guest of honor also the director Alessandro Rak, who animated Cinderella the Cat.
In the shopping center there were 30 thousand entries over two days, but in the city and with a guest like Cristina D’Avena the organizers of the Festival del Nerd hope to be able to exceed the numbers of previous editions.
