182 counterfeit banknotes seized in Taranto by the Financial Police

Operation aimed at combating counterfeiting reveals a prevalence of 50 and 20 euro banknotes

The Taranto Financial Police seized 182 counterfeit banknotes, with a total value of over 7,000 euros. The investigations are supported by the National Analysis Center of the Bank of Italy.

The Taranto Financial Police recently seized 182 fake banknotes, for a total value of more than 7,000 euros, as part of operations to combat the phenomenon of the so-called “false cash”. The intervention is part of a series of actions aimed at stopping the circulation of counterfeit money.

The seized banknotes are mainly divided into denominations of 50 euros, with 86 pieces for a value of 4,300 euros, and 20 euros, with 84 pieces for a value of 1,680 euros. This is followed by 8 100 euro banknotes, equal to 800 euros, while the remainder are divided into smaller denominations of 200, 10 and 5 euros. Curiously, no fake 500 euro notes were found.

A crucial role in the investigations is played by the synergies with the National Analysis Center of the Bank of Italy, which provides the authorities with the banknotes already identified as fake for further investigative investigations. This collaboration aims to discover possible links with other economic crimes in the province of Taranto.

The fight against currency counterfeiting is one of the legal prerogatives of the Guardia di Finanza, which acts to protect the integrity of means of payment and to maintain public trust in the euro, a tangible symbol of European unity. This commitment is reflected in the specialization of the Corps, defined by the Legislative Decree of 19 August 2016, n. 177, which gives it the task of supervision and repression in the economic and financial field.
