New shocks at Palazzo Ducale in view of the local elections in Sassari. Today mayor Nanni Campus removed councilor Laura Useri, entrusting the mandates for Culture, Educational Policies and Equal Opportunities to councilor Virginia Orunesu. Expected at the press conference to present the “Sassari Città Regia” project, Useri did not show up, but after a few hours a very concise communication appeared on the home page of the Municipality’s institutional website in which, beyond the usual thanks, it is specified that the revocation by Campus is motivated by the fact that “there was a lack of sharing on the prospects of the joint action of the council and the majority”.
The story closely resembles the one which, in the midst of the tussle over the regional elections, had as its protagonist the former deputy mayor Gianfranco Meazza, whose excessive dynamism in the electoral campaign had not been appreciated by the mayor, in particular for Fratelli d’Italia. The confrontation turned into an irreparable rift, with Meazza definitively moving from the civic grouping of Campus to the center-right led by the party of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. According to what we learn, even in the case of Laura Useri the reasons for the “dismissal” would be the same.
Elected with the M5S, Useri entered the majority in 2020 together with the other two Grillini councilors, including the prime minister Maurilio Murru. Campus, having lost the support of six councilors elected on the civic lists of which it is the standard-bearer, risked being left without a majority in those days and was saved by the help of the Five Star Movement. Laura Useri’s journey, however, does not seem to stop here, because in the last few hours the councilor would have expressed her desire to join the center-right and support Gavino Mariotti’s candidacy for mayor. Hence the break with Campus.
At this point it remains to be understood whether the civic movement still has the numbers to move forward on its own, in support of Nicola Lucchi’s candidacy, or whether what happened this morning is preparatory to that armistice hoped for by Mariotti until a few days ago.
At the moment the centre-right is meeting in a conclave in Oristano, to discuss Sassari but also Cagliari, Alghero and the other municipalities in which they will vote. The white smoke could arrive as early as the evening.
