Brescia-Ternana in memory of Vittorio Mero

Brescia-Ternana it will be played without a shadow of a doubt even in the memory of Vittorio Mero. The full-back wore both the Brescia and Ternana shirts. In the rossoverde he spent a short period on loan from the Rondinelle in the 2000/01 season in Serie B. The coach of the Ternana team was Andrea Agostinelli and in the squad there were players like Ciccio Grabbi (20 league goals for him that season), Ciccio Schenardi, Massimo Borgobello, Stefano Lucchini and many others who have written pages of history of the Fere.

Merein that season, he made 19 appearances in the six months he played in Terni on loan from Brescia. At the end of the season he returned to base but, in the first part of that year, Mero was unable to find space on the pitch. Hence the decision to leave on loan during the winter transfer window. Unfortunately on January 23, 2002 Mero, while his teammates were busy in Italian Cup against Parma, he had a frightening accident along highway 14 near Cazzago San Martino. Mero couldn’t play that match because he was suspended and he was returning home to his family in Nava. A lorry hit a lorry which invaded the lane occupied by Mero with his car, a collision which was fatal and cost the life of the former Brescia and Ternana full-back.

At the end of the first half of Parma-Brescia the announcement of his death was given to his team mates who, led by Roberto Baggio, decided not to take the field in the second half. The players left the field in tears and the match was postponed.

Vittorio Mero he made 57 appearances for Brescia in his four seasons with the Rondinelle, also winning promotion to Serie A and 19 with Ternana. The ‘Sheriff’as she had nicknamed him Nedo Sonetti his coach at Brescia, he has always stood out for his friendly nature and the professionalism he displayed on and off the pitch. In fact, this nickname was given to him for the seriousness with which he trained every day and which he then also demonstrated in the match.

Without a doubt, the minds of the two clubs and the fans next Saturday will be on Vittorio Mero, whose number 13 was also retired by Brescia. A match between Brescia And Ternana which, even 24 years after his death, will always be played in the name of the ‘Sheriff’.
