From the Metro Plus Program over seven and a half million for social interventions

Over seven and a half million euros, 7,515,800 to be precise: this is the amount of resources that the national program “METRO Plus and medium-sized cities in the South” 2021-2027 allocates to the regional capital, after Catanzaro was identified as the beneficiary of the program on the basis of the ranking obtained based on the demographic size and the values of the so-called IDS index, which measures the need for actions to combat socio-economic hardship.

For the use of available resources, the council chaired by the mayor Nicola Fiorita, approved, on the proposal of the councilor for social policies Giusi Pino, the project sheets to be sent to the department for cohesion policies and for the South at the Presidency of council of ministers, which will have to examine and approve them before moving on to the operational phase.

Commenting on the council resolution, councilor Pino spoke “of a program of great social value, a strategy shared with the social partnership with the aim of including the weakest sections of society by offering them tools and opportunities that do not exist today. Just to give a few examples and postponing the timely and complete illustration of the program until after approval by the central government – the councilor continued – we imagined a nursery for children from 0 to 6 years old to be made available to mothers less well off; we thought we could avoid the danger of abandonment of newborns by creating a protected structure ready to welcome them; we will create a social clinic in collaboration with the specialist medical staff available to meet those segments of the population who are currently forced, unfortunately, to give up treatment; we will equip ourselves with a reception center for women victims of violence that respects the Istanbul Convention, the absence of which in the city today forces us to make second-best solutions which sometimes do not allow us to guarantee optimal conditions of confidentiality; we will implement a series of targeted actions to combat educational poverty and avoid the risk of marginalization for Roma, Sinti and Caminanti children. In short – concluded Giusi Pino – I believe these few examples of everything that has been planned give an idea of the scope of a strategy that is global and beyond any logic of spot interventions. Support for vulnerable groups can only have this type of approach on the part of the institutions and we intend to pursue it to obtain results that the city has been waiting for for too long”.
