(Arv) Venice 29 March. 2024 – “I wish all Venetians my best wishes for an Easter spent in peace with their loved ones. My hope is that this Easter will pave the way for convinced peace negotiations that will restore to the peoples and nations today tormented by war that quiet, security and tranquility that we all actually need to continue on the path towards justice and well-being, to be able to face together the only wars we have to wage: fighting against hunger, poverty, injustice, defending health and combating diseases, tackling climate change, protecting the environment and everyone’s right to live in a healthy reality , safe, right”. With these words begins the message of good wishes from the President of the Veneto Regional Council, Roberto Ciambetti, on the occasion of the Easter holidays. “At this moment, a dear thought goes to the Armenian community, which has a deep and rooted history in Veneto – continues Ciambetti – Armenia is an island of European culture between the Caucasus and the Middle East and has experienced the exodus from Nogorno-Karabakh consumed in the indifference of international public opinion. They too are victims of a violent war: they too have the right to PEACE. The wars waged today take away resources that are indispensable for the entire world community. Never before has it been necessary for all warring parties to begin seeking peace again, before the dark powers of destruction unleashed by science engulf all humanity in accidental or planned self-destruction. […] We must never negotiate out of fear, but we must never be afraid to negotiate” said US President John F. Kennedy in his inauguration speech in 1961 and although 63 years have passed, that statement captures current reality very well. We have no alternatives: asking for the start of peace negotiations is not an act of cowardice, but a choice of justice, it is not taking one side or the other, but being with those who suffer, with those who mourn , with those who today are not as fortunate as we are to celebrate Easter which in our faith and culture speaks of Rebirth and the victory of life over death. Peace is life and rebirth: may peace enter all our families.”
