THE CASE
Two days ago three different units of the Nas carabinieri visited as many places in the Santa Maria Goretti hospital in Latina. A series of checks which, at the moment, have not produced any type of measure, but which testify to the magnifying glass focused by the military on the Pontine hospital and beyond. The men and women of Major Felice Egidio, commander of the Anti-adulteration and Healthcare Unit of Latina and Frosinone, first inspected the urology department, in order to verify the conditions of the places, as well as test the structural staticity that affects the entire hospital; they then moved on to the kitchens, here too to identify any structural problems and, furthermore, related to the hygienic conditions of the rooms; finally, under the watchful eye of the carabinieri, the emergency department was completed, where the overcrowded situation, the excessive parking of patients, and the presence of doctors from VAT registered cooperatives were verified.
At the moment there are no particular measures taken by the soldiers of the Carabinieri, as also assured by the medical director of the hospital Sergio Parrocchia: «It was a simple routine activity, a series of checks on various aspects whose results were shared with the management of the hospital” explained the director, who for a few weeks was also extraordinary commissioner of the Latina ASL, until the recent appointment of Sabrina Cenciarelli two days ago. So much so that inspections will also be carried out in these days in other hospitals in the province of Latina, like Frosinone, which have come under the magnifying glass of the Anti-adulteration and Healthcare Unit.
«The status quo of the hospital and the emergency room was established, gripped by the overcrowding of patients and the consequent lack of availability of beds» the words used by the delegate of the FP CGIL of Frosinone and Latina Claudio Maggiore: «A chronic and constant situation , which represents the one currently affecting the entire Local Health Authority of Latina. In fact, even in the other emergency departments in the province, the context is certainly no better, but at the Goretti hospital it is even more problematic given the catchment area. And, in view of the summer, with the influx of tourists to the seaside resorts, it certainly won’t improve. The daily difficulties presented to us are many, as the trade unionist testifies, which affect the quality of healthcare offered in the area. There is still a lot to do in terms of organization and efficiency.”
For several days, in fact, the Goretti hospital has been under pressure again, dealing with many, many accesses and red codes in the face of few staff, who are also exhausted. Shortly after 12pm yesterday there were 9 people waiting (none in code red), 35 in treatment (of which 5 in code red), 35 waiting for hospitalization and 12 under observation. A total of 91 patients, which dropped to just 90 just before 4pm, a full four hours later. Numbers almost equal to those of the large hospitals in Rome, such as San Camillo or Sant’Andrea, but with structures and staff not comparable to those of the capital.
