The celebrations began, as per tradition, with cannon shots fired both in the morning and at midday to announce the upcoming celebration to the entire city.

The

Various celebrations in the cathedral

In the morning, the mass was presided over by Mons. Ignazio Petriglieri, Vicar General of the Diocese of Noto, in the cathedral. The entire municipal administration took part in the celebration, in fact at the end the mayor Maria Monisteri recited the act of entrustment to the patron saint. Various military authorities were also present.

In the afternoon, after some fake news announcing the suspension of the celebrations, the Eucharistic celebration was held before the long procession. The mass which began a few minutes late saw a large participation of faithful and tourists.

A peculiarity of this edition is the historical procession of figures in typical clothes representing the ancient Counts of Modica.

Over 12km of procession through the streets of the city

The afternoon celebration, presided over by the parish priest of the Mother Church, Don Michele Fidone, was the beginning of the long procession which concluded five minutes before midnight in the churchyard. Then for ten minutes the fireworks kept thousands of people looking up.

Finally, the traditional tours inside the cathedral packed everywhere with people, faithful and curious about the feast of the Holy Knight.

An exciting and colorful release conceived for this year by the Sciuta group. In addition to the traditional nazzarieddi, small pieces of colored paper, there are also smoke bombs. Subsequently, the long procession began and unfolded among a river of people who followed the Holy Knight at every stage. Numerous young bearers and others supported the party.

The suggestive stop in Santa Teresa

In addition to the traditional stages and the famous charges, in which the Holy Martyr arrives running on the shoulders of the bearers, this year the simulacrum entered the church of Santa Teresa welcomed by the parish priest Don Rocco Zuppardo and the community. Here the catechesis students welcomed the Patron Saint with the traditional singing of the Novena of Saint George, written in the Modican vernacular. An evocative and exciting moment for those present.

There was no shortage of traditional stops: Carlo Papa, Sant’Antonino, Nino Baglieri’s house, Carcere, al Collegio, Pizzo, Piazza San Giovanni, then Ala Fontana, the Vignazza district, the Badia, Church of Santa Margherita, then Santa Maria , Corso Umberto and then the last stop in San Pietro before the ascent.

The Mayor, Maria Monisteri, the entire council, the Honorable Ignazio Abbate, the President of the City Council, Maria Cristina Minardo and several councilors: Alessio Ruffino, Giovanni Alecci, Rita Floridia and Daniele Scapellato followed the procession step by step.

Applause goes to the law enforcement service coordinated by the police force. In fact, everything took place in order and safety and within the times established by the organizing committee. A participatory and followed party, widely reported on social media.

A sign that the celebration in honor of the Holy Knight is still alive.

Small negative note, the accident occurred in the first phase of the procession right in front of the Santa Teresa elementary school, where two people were injured due to the collapse of some marble slabs.
