Trento – The Board of Directors of the University of Trento has given the green light to the establishment of the School of Medicine and Surgery, the structure which will have the task of coordinating the activities relating to medical-health training in synergy with the Health Authority, as the degree courses already activated in Medicine and Surgery and in Professional Education and future specializations in the medical field. The official announcement came after the green light from the UniTrento Academic Senate and after the similar decision taken by the Academic Senate and the Board of Directors of the University of Verona a few days ago. The School of Medicine was in fact created as an inter-university structure between Trento and Verona, regulated by a specific agreement. But also as a connection structure, because the training activities will also partly take place in medical-health structures, starting with those of the provincial health services company.
After the yes to the establishment of the School of Medicine and Surgery, the next steps are now the appointment of the president and the definition of the first specializations, essential for training new doctors. The first specialty schools will be defined by the School of Medicine and Surgery in the next few weeks and will then undergo the ministerial accreditation process to probably start already in time for the next academic year 2024/25.
The Regulations of the School of Medicine and Surgery were also approved in today’s session following the agreement of the UniTrento departments involved – the Interdepartmental Center for Medical Sciences (Cismed), the Interdepartmental Center for Mind/Brain (Cimec), the Department of Cellular, Computational and Integrated Biology and the Department of Psychology and Cognitive Sciences – and of the seven UniVerona departments active in the medical-health field (Medicine, Neurosciences, Biomedicine and Movement, Diagnostics and Public Health, Surgical, odontostomatological and maternal-child sciences; Engineering for Innovation Medicine – Section of Innovation Biomedicine), in the scientific-technological field (Informatics) and in the socio-humanistic field (Human Sciences).
Satisfaction with the green light for the School was expressed by the rector Flavio Deflorian: «For the Medicine project it is an important step, which consolidates the collaboration with the University of Verona and guarantees an institutional structure consistent with the recent changes to the University Statute . It is all the more important because it allows us to give life to new initiatives within the medical specialization schools and, further down the line, also with regards to the healthcare professions. It should be underlined that this School of Medicine and Surgery itself has something new: it is the first to be born as an inter-university initiative. It is a possibility that has already been foreseen by the legislation for some time, but in fact it is the first time that it has been applied in Italy”.
This is a point that was also underlined by the rector of the University of Verona, Pier Francesco Nocini, reached by the news of the approval by UniTrento: «The establishment of the new inter-university School of Medicine and Surgery is the result of the long and fruitful scientific and educational collaboration started with the then magnificent rector Collini and continued with the sharing of intentions with the magnificent rector Deflorian. I am sure that this collaboration between our universities, which is a new way of doing academia, is the main road for the medicine of the future.”
In parallel with the establishment of the School, a memorandum of understanding is being defined between the Autonomous Province of Trento and the University of Trento for the carrying out of healthcare, teaching and research activities which will serve to define the guidelines and the respective skills of what will be the future integrated university healthcare company.
