VENICE – The rules at the port of Venice are changing, with the possibility for ships up to 180 meters with dangerous goods on board to enter the port for a couple of hours beyond the current limit, i.e. sunset. The bollards currently foreseen have been revisited by the Port Authority, extending the navigation hours along the Malamocco-Marghera canal. In fact, until now ships arrived at sunset and could not enter the entrance to the port because it takes two hours to reach the terminal. So they had to wait at anchor. Now, with the Malamocco-Marghera canal illuminated, they can do so, because they extend the “tolerance” limit by two hours. The same goes for exits: if until now ships had to wait for dawn, they can now leave two hours earlier.

Ordinance 20/2024 also brings other innovations including the fact that “the specific limitations for moorings in the Southern Canal will not apply to ships of less than 3 thousand gross tonnage or less than one hundred meters in length”. Maritime director Admiral Filippo Marini analyzed the risk assessment proposed by the Port Authority of the Northern Adriatic Sea – ports of Venice and Chioggia, highlighting how new scenarios are applicable from the study “Channeling the green deal for Venice”. For this reason it was decided to “increase the nautical operations of the port, while maintaining the levels of navigation safety and environmental protection unchanged”.

THE AUTHORITY’

From the Port System Authority the president Fulvio Lino di Blasio commented on the ordinance as follows: «It modifies the access rules to the lagoon port also in light of some of the results of the “Channeling the green deal for Venice” project, promoted by the Port System Authority, contributing to improving the operational levels of the Venetian port whilst always maintaining the issue of navigation safety and environmental protection as a priority. It is an important result for the competitiveness of the port, which will allow a measurable return in terms of increased traffic and which demonstrates how the scientific approach adopted by the Authority in analyzing naval traffic in the lagoon is the only way to identify solutions that they allow economic activity to be combined with respect for environmental balance”.

THE PORT COMMUNITY

In the same vein, Venice Port Community, a reality that includes around forty port operators. President Alessandro Becce highlighted the future developments that this step can create: «It could be the start of a path that leads to 24-hour operation of the Venetian port, a first step that we hope can be followed carefully with analyzes and simulations . We are confident that the path taken by the Port Authority and the Port System Authority can guarantee a future for the entire production sector and the port economic fabric”.

The ordinance will have direct implications for operators in the sector, according to the director of the Marghera industrial zone authority Gianluca Palma: «Like all new developments, operators will seize the opportunity to expand their operational capabilities. These are the prerequisites for a modern and competitive port on the markets. The new energy products, which already travel by ship today, will thus be able to develop more and more”. Alessandro Santi, deputy vice-president of the Venice Port Community then concluded: «We welcome the desire of the Port Authority to lay the foundations for a future of a regulated port in the presence of the operations of the Mose. The potential of Venice and Chioggia is undisputed and not only for the port, but remembering the importance of fishing. We have defined a path that will lead, hopefully in a very short time, to having new tools that allow us to extend the operations of ports and increase their efficiency”.
