MILAZZO – Over a hundred students and teachers suffered ailments while on a school trip to Puglia, between Fasano and Alberobello: severe abdominal pain, vomiting and stomach ache. It happened to the students of the Industrial Technical Institute of Milazzo. The 118 doctors intervened for several of them, while for some it was necessary to be transferred to the emergency room. The source of the uneasiness appears to be the food served to students and teachers, in particular the chicken which was part of the menu.
Some kids have resorted to IVs to detox. The school has informed the police of the incident and the Carabinieri Nas group is carrying out checks in the structure that served the food to the children. The possible return has not yet been decided, also to allow the improvement of health conditions to face the journey.

IN ALL 150 INVOLVED

There are 150 people, including students and professors on a school trip from Sicily to the province of Brindisi, who yesterday complained of abdominal pain with vomiting, diarrhea and hyperpyrexia during their stay in a hotel in Fasano. They report it from the ASL Brindisi. These are students and teachers of the Industrial Technical Institute of Milazzo. Yesterday the first emergency call to the 118 operations center was made around 5pm and 6 ambulances were sent. All symptomatic patients were examined at the medical point set up in the accommodation facility. Between yesterday evening and this morning 16 people were centralized and treated in the Ppit (first aid point) of Fasano and in the emergency room of Ostuni.

The emergency, as highlighted by the ASL, ended around 11.30 today with the return to Sicily of the 3 buses, except for the 8 patients currently managed in Fasano and Ostuni, whose return to Sicily is expected shortly. Checks are currently underway by the «Prevention Department Services on epidemiological aspects and food safety to identify any causes» that would have led to the alleged food poisoning.
