TO Saint Gilla will arise new environmental, archaeological and sports park, as illustrated in the Puc presented two days ago by the mayor of Cagliari, Paolo Truzzu.

The area in question has a long history and cultural tradition, which has its roots in the Middle Ages. City councilor Roberto Mura, a Psd’Az member, explains it well in a recent post. “Perhaps – he writes – not everyone knows that in the area where the shopping center and the former Enel power plant are now located stood the medieval city of Santa Ilia or Santa Gilla, an important city in the Sardinian Middle Ages, capital of the Kingdom of Càlari in the thirteenth century and today almost completely forgotten”.

“The sources – explains Mura – tell us that i The sovereigns, having now almost abandoned the ancient Càrales, established their headquarters in the village of Santa Ilia which was located near the Santa Gilla pond. In the thirteenth century this center was equipped with towers and defense walls, becoming a real medieval capital, where important documents were issued and decisions were made that affected life in the Kingdom in the Sardinian Middle Ages. This important city was razed to the ground in 1258 by a coalition led by Pisa and its memory was lost”.

The project in question involves the environmental redevelopment of the former Enel power plant site to turn it into a cultural and environmental hub through the following actions: recovery and redevelopment of the main building to be used as the Santa Igia museum as a place for recovery and exhibition of the archaeological finds of the area; reclamation of the squares and spaces surrounding the main building by planning an “archaeological site” to carry out an adequate archaeological excavation campaign to investigate the site of the ancient city of “Santa Igia”; restoration of any areas without archaeological findings to be used as a park and sports activities with low environmental impact; creation of light infrastructures, preferably made of wood, to access the area from the commercial area car park, including the creation of a path up to the lagoon’s body of water.
