LAWN. Gianni Del Vecchio, historic figure of the Prato left, who served two terms as secretary of the left-wing Democrats from 1999 to 2006 before assuming the presidency of the Tuscan Water Authority, died last night at the age of 71. Del Vecchio had been ill for some time.

Originally from Latronico, he arrived in Prato in 1968 and at the beginning of the Seventies was already involved in the city’s student movements. In 1975 he became secretary of the Fgci, then joined the regional secretary and began his career as a PCI official. He was elected to the city council for 20 years, from 1975 to 1995, group leader of the PCI. From 1984 to 1988 he was president of ASL 4 and councilor for economic development, health and schools.

In 1995 he stopped being an official of the PCI and became commercial director at a consortium of companies.

In 1999 he was elected provincial secretary of the Left Democrats, a position he held for two terms, until 2006.

Since 2009 he has returned to private practice and manages the Villa Fiorita nursing home until 2018.

But his passion for politics has not yet subsided, and in 2020 he will run again in the regional elections on the Ecologist Civic Left list in support of Eugenio Giani.

The body will be exhibited in the Farewell Chapels of the Public Assistance and tomorrow, March 29, a funeral chapel will be set up in the Municipality.
