Brigadier General Romeo Paterno of the Air Force visits the Chocolate Museum of Modica

A very welcome visit to the Chocolate Museum of Modica by Air Force Brigadier General Romeo Paterno, Deputy Commander of the Schools Command of the 3rd Military Air Region, accompanied by Lieutenant Colonel Roberto Tabaroni Commander of the Syracuse Air Force Detachment.

General Paternò was welcomed by the Director of the Consortium Nino Scivoletto, who illustrated the history of Modica PGI chocolate, through the panels displayed in the Italy in miniature hall, depicting the archival documentation which, thanks to Professor Grazia Dormiente curator of the research in the archive of the Grimaldi family, have allowed us to demonstrate the historical link of the product with the territory, giving registry certainty to the product since 1746.

Also illustrated: the process that led to PGI recognition; the increase in the production of Modica PGI chocolate from 2019 to 2023; the growing use of Modica PGI chocolate as an ingredient in processed products, as well as the beneficial effects produced by Modica PGI chocolate on the city, as a tourist and gastronomic attractor.

General Paterno paid particular attention to the history of Modica chocolate, and focused in particular on some documents from the Grimaldi archive which describe the ingredients used in the 18th century for the production of chocolate, as well as the names of the chocolatiers at the time service of the Grimaldis.

A particular positive consideration was expressed for the chocolate sculptures exhibited in the rooms of the Museum, as well as for the display case containing the precious gold medals achieved by the award-winning Pietro Borrometi Chocolate Factory of the legendary Caffè Orientale, in the International Exhibitions of London and Paris respectively in 1907 and 1910.

For General Paternò’s visit, the Consortium had a Modica PGI chocolate bar produced, with dedicated wrapping, which, autographed by the General, was placed in the “Special wrapping” section of the Museum.

The Consortium, grateful for the visit, gave General Paterno the gift of Grazia Dormiente’s book “The primacy of Modica chocolate” published by the State Printing Office and the folder containing the philatelic card containing the exclusive stamp that the Ministry of Economic Development and Poste Italiane dedicated to Modica Chocolate on the occasion of its recognition as the first and only European PGI chocolate.

Appreciation for the dedication left by General Paterno who wrote in the register of illustrious visitors: “Splendid initiative that gives prestige and richness to our Beautiful Italy”.

Final tasting with 70% Modica PGI chocolate combined with CHO, the first liqueur with Modica PGI chocolate, curated by Gianni Frasca, Piero Puglisi and the Sommelier Giorgio Solarino of Solbarocco.
