More than an impartial commission, they say. Mayor Decaro is right to cry and scream. In fact, to evaluate what happened in Bari after the arrests for the mafia, the Interior Ministry sends us, together with two others, also a retired prefect, Claudio Sammartino, who is none other than the uncle of a Sicilian regional parliamentarian from the League called Luca Sammartino. We read it the other day in Repubblica. But how? The uncle of one of the League! But do you realize it? And you call this impartiality? So on Sunday, Andrea Orlando, the former minister of the Democratic Party, tweeted: “If he is not a namesake, the prefect Sammartino appointed to the access commission to Bari, who I have known as an excellent official, is the uncle of an exponent of the League in Sicily. Wasn’t there anyone else?”.

To understand bitterness and the opposition contained in these words of the Honorable Orlando, it must be remembered that in recent years, when the prefect Sammartino was appointed by the centre-left governments to the role of “state commissioner for the Sicily region”, i.e. from 2016 to 2018, his nephew Luca was not in the League but was an elected representative of the Democratic Party. What’s more: the prefect’s nephew was one of the Catania leaders of the Democratic Party. And when his uncle even became prefect of Catania, his nephew Luca was, still in the Democratic Party, the champion of the collection of preferences for the center-left in eastern Sicily. That is, he was the most voted and powerful of all in Catania, the city in which his uncle was prefect. Here you are.

It’s obvious to anyone that if you have a nephew in the Democratic Party you are impartial, but when this nephew passes into the League you are no longer impartial. Even a child would understand it. However, the greatest bitterness of Orlando, but also of other leaders of the democratic party, must above all be that of not having promoted the prefect Sammartino to much higher positions when he was still impartial, i.e. when his nephew attended the Nazarene. Having said this, it is obvious that between uncles and nephews there is always an absolute correspondence of inclinations. Characteristic, cultural and even political. Everybody knows. They, that is, uncles and nephews, notoriously move in unison like a Macedonian phalanx. Where one goes, the other also goes. For definitive proof, let’s now paraphrase Andrea Orlando’s tweet: “If he is not a homonym, the Honorable Enrico Letta, appointed secretary of the Democratic Party, who I have known as an excellent Prime Minister, is the nephew of Gianni Letta’s right-hand man Silvio Berlusconi. Wasn’t there anyone else?”.
