Antonella Clerici emergency ovarian surgery. A “tsunami” was defined by the presenter, who discovered a complication last Thursday that forced her to go under the knife. The operation to which she underwent in a clinic in Rome «is simple, minimally invasive because it is done laparoscopically (with very small incisions), of a fairly short duration and without any aesthetic or functional problems in menopause.

The removal of the two ovaries, in the presence of a cyst that presents anomalies, is the right indication according to the guidelines. But the definitive diagnosis can only be given by histological examination.” This was stated to Adnkronos Salute by Vito Trojano, president of the Italian Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics (Sigo) who explains, «starting from the information that Antonella Clerici has published», the type of operation to which the presenter was subjected.

What are ovarian cysts and the risks

Ovarian cysts are a fairly common problem, even in post menopause and, Trojano further explains, «they can be of various nature: benign; be the beginning of an oncological or borderline problem between a benign and a malignant pathology.”

If a cyst, already known – as it seems in the case of the presenter – “presents anomalous variations, it is removed and, in the case of a patient in menopause, prevention requires that both ovaries be removed because it makes no sense to leave an ovary that is stopped’ and which can only, over time, produce a subsequent problem and should, for this reason, be checked periodically”.

And if, as it seems, only the ovaries were removed “it is most likely a benign pathology which, being evolving, was rightly removed surgically. The urgency, reported by the presenter, could be linked to an inflammatory event or internal variations in the cyst of a proliferative type”, concluded Trojano, wishing Antonella Clerici a speedy recovery.
