We receive and publish a press release from UIL FPL Basilicata:

“The regional hospital network is reaching its lowest point in recent years.

The choices made by the Strategic Management which are, to say the least, revisable have led the healthcare network to collapse, and the garrison of Melfi above all it is confirmation of this.

Shortage of nurses, disorganization and inconveniences reign supreme, in an everyday life that is truly difficult to describe.

We are in the hospital in Melfi, where they register important and now atavistic critical issues.

The reality of the Melfi hospital is certainly no different or worse than that of other structures of the same company.

Meanwhile, summer is approaching and very poor local healthcare will lead to an influx in the emergency room which is destined to become an unbearable burden for doctors and nurses.

A situation that cannot fail to cause serious concern for the state of healthcare in an area such as Lucania, to which is added, as mentioned, the chronic problem of lack of personnel.

A critical issue that weighs on the efficiency of a hospital that has an enormous catchment area.

Let’s be clear once and for all: in the company They employ excellent professionals who go out of their way every day to manage situations that do not put them in a position to express themselves at their best.

Trenches in which fighting takes place in absolute precariousness.

A picture that leads citizens to increasingly turn elsewhere.

The situation in emergency areas are collapsing: staff shortages, very long waits, improper access and attacks on doctors and nurses are turning emergency rooms into powder kegs.

If we don’t intervene as soon as possible with structural solutions and not with the usual warm blankets that serve little or nothing, there will be total chaos.

Our action aims to study possible solutions and for this reason the contribution of all operators in the sector and trade unions is fundamental in trying to draw up together a road map of urgent interventions to suggest to the regional government.

There is a risk of no longer being able to work “safely” with unlikely, inhuman rhythms.

Unfortunately, this phenomenon has spread to all hospital sectors and is rapidly degenerating and tiredness and stress are constant companions for every operator involved in assistance and treatment.

But it seems that this repetitive phenomenon does not affect company top management in the slightest, who instead of planning preventive strategies simply rely on the good will and initiative dictated by the work experience acquired over years and years of hard work by each individual operator.

But we know that without adequate planning, when the number of operators has already been clearly insufficient for some time, it cannot be sustained indefinitely, especially when the cry for help from healthcare personnel remains unheard.

We would like to highlight that the Melfi Emergency Department appears to be the tip of the iceberg of a phenomenon that has a minimum common denominator: the lack of staff.

This problem is certainly easily visible in the emergency room, as this structure is the gateway to the hospital, but if you enter the hospital, it is also visible in all sectors: medical and surgical hospitalizations, intensive care, operating rooms, etc., where not even the institution of prompt availability can resolve the critical issues and inconvenience that has been created.

The time has come to truly resolve this issue that is suffocating the community; a “stop-gap” strategy of having a “wedding with dried figs” is no longer sustainable, to the detriment of the quality of care and of the staff themselves, and above all of the people in need of care and assistance.

When it comes to health, our most precious asset, this right requires 360-degree protection from everyone: institutions, colleges, orders, associations and citizens.

Public health must be strengthened in all its sectors, ready to give concrete answers to the entire regional community, especially in the emergency and urgency sector, a compartment that constitutes a lifeline for many”.
