the green tax for passengers is triggered

There is no comforting news from Lufthansa for those who love traveling by air. There ecological transition it has a weight and it seems that, with little surprise, the passengers will also have to bear it in part. As if the extras added to the booking phase over the last few years weren’t enough, we now need to deal with European anti-pollution regulations.

Lufthansa increases prices

A has been announced new surcharge by the Lufthansa group, which highlights how this need is the result of regulations active within the borders of the European Union. In fact, additional costs are foreseen for anti-pollution regulations. A constantly increasing expense item for company budgets, to which passengers are asked to contribute.

Going into detail, we talk about the need for 2% fuel mix sustainable for aviation. This applies to all departures from European Union countries, starting from January 1, 2025. The set of changes implemented to the system is then added to the list EU Emissions Trading System. Not to mention further regulatory environmental costs such as:

  • Compensation System;
  • Reduction of Carbon Emissions for International Aviation.

How will the expected surcharge materialize? Nobody excluded, one might say. The tax will be applied to all flights sold and operated by the Lufthansa group, with reference exclusively to departures from 27 EU countriesas well as from United Kingdomfrom the Norway and from Swiss.

The route will decide the exact amount, but it is possible to indicate the oscillation range: between 1 and 72 euros. Since when will there be a Lufthansa surcharge? The company will apply it to all tickets issued starting from Wednesday 26 Junewith reference to departures from 1 January 2025.

Lufthansa-Ita Airways

Certainly not the best way to approach the conclusion of the agreement between Lufthansa and Ita Airways. As mentioned, considering the already many extra costs, such as luggage in the overhead bin, also targeted by the European Commission, the last thing passengers wanted to read was a surcharge.

In any case, as far as the negotiations are concerned, we know that after the recent hesitations, anticipations are arriving from Brussels on the positive conclusion of the deal.

A happy ending which is already giving rise to hypotheses about the near future. Considering the importance of the brand, a return of Alitalia is feared. In fact, in this respect, it could be said that Ita’s story was as short as it was relevant, considering the ending.

However, these are nothing more than hypotheses, excluding two certainties. On the one hand, there will be generalized savings on purchases. Beyond the indicated surcharge, a saving is expected compared to the current tariffs of the Italian carrier. Added to this is a new flow of passengers who will pass through Rome on Ita Airways flights, channeled by Lufthansa, as already happens with Swiss, Austrian and Brussels Airlines.
