no artificial intelligence – Libero Quotidiano

The social media giant Meta, a company controlled by Mark Zuckerberg, has stopped the Artificial Intelligence (hereinafter AI) project in Europe for the moment. And it will postpone the launch of its new AI software following concerns from data protection agencies. In a post on the company’s blog, in fact in the last few hours it was explained that the Irish Data Protection Commission (Dpc) – the Irish data protection authority that acts as a reference for Meta in the EU – asked the company to postpone the training of AI models carried out using publicly available posts on Facebook and Instagram. Thanks to the Meta AI software – designed to create texts and images and thus answer users’ questions – the group aims to compete with other programs such as the ChatGPT chatbot.

Meta said she was particularly “disappointed” by the request made by the DPC, especially given that she considers it «a step backwards for European innovation, competition in the development of AI and which will lead to further delays in bringing the benefits of AI to European citizens.” Meta’s top managers had already warned the DPC of the project for months, reiterating that they were pursuing an “approach compliant with both the laws and also EU regulations”.

The company’s leaders then underlined that without this “training” which they have been prevented from doing for the moment, it is not possible to offer users in Europe a high-level experience. On this occasion, Meta then wanted to reiterate that it is the only company to conduct training for AI models, underlining that it is “more transparent than many of its counterparts in the sector”.
