The Gasometer as you have (almost) never seen it. That is, from the inside. For four Sundays it will be possible to visit the great monument of industrial archeology which stands out over the Ostiense district, a few steps from the Tiber, and which has been the backdrop to many film scenes – from Totò The Honest gang to Beggar by Pier Paolo Pasolini and Le Fate ignoranti by Ferzan Ozpetek – and video clips, such as that of “Honey (are u coming?)” by Maneskin.

The magic of the Uninhabitable: the Cinecittà Luce Archive showcases 8 Italian structures that man cannot inhabit

Eni in collaboration with the Italian Environment Fund, in fact, opens the doors of the site to the public for 4 events from July to November: a unique opportunity to enter the heart of the industrial site after the first extraordinary opening, organized for Sunday 2 June.

Ninety meters high and with a diameter of 60 metres, the Gazometro was part of the industrial district of the capital which arose between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries together with the river port, the general warehouses and the Montemartini power plant, now transformed into a museum. The 200 thousand cubic meter plant, at that time the largest in Europe, was used to store gas. The three smaller gasometers that flank the main one were built starting in 1910 while the works to build what later became the Gazometer by definition began in 1935 and the structure went into use two years later, in July 1937.

During the guided tours, which will be free and open to all upon reservation, you will be able to retrace the history of the area and discover how the plant worked in the last century. There will also be space to learn about the future of the area, with the environmental redevelopment project carried out by Eni and the experimental activities launched in the scientific, social and cultural fields, such as the recent collaboration with Spazio Taverna for the exhibition “Contemporary Energies ”, first exhibition of 17 young emerging artists as part of the “Arte al Gazometro” exhibition.

The site will then also be visitable during major events such as Videocittà – the Festival of Vision, scheduled from 5 to 7 July and Maker Faire Rome – The European Edition, from 25 to 27 October. It is possible to book your visit through the dedicated platform: enigazometroaperto.it. Access to the complex is from via del Commercio 9/11.
