Third is the candidate without a list, an exploit of the Marxist-Leninists
The center-right is ahead in Cyprus to the European elections as indicated by the first exit polls (here are the results of the European elections live). The Christian Democrats of Disy (EPP) are first, in a range that goes between 25.5 and 28.5%, followed by the Marxist-Leninists of Akel (The Left), between 23 and 26%. In third place the real surprise of the elections on the Mediterranean island: between 12 and 15% went Fidias Panayiotou, a very famous YouTuber in Cyprus who presented himself at the polls without any list, as a totally independent candidate.
On YouTube, Panayiotou’s channel has 2.6 million subscribers, more than double the total population of the island of Cyprus.
The parties Diko and Edek – both in the S&D group in the European Chamber – instead they are stuck in fourth and fifth place: the first travels between 7.5% and 10.5%, the second between 3.5 and 5%.
Followed by the ultra-Europeanists of Volt, who according to the exit polls are between 3 and 4.5%. Bringing up the rear is Democratic Alignment (Dipa), who sits among the liberals in the EP and who would not go beyond 3.5%. Cyprus is entitled to six seats in the European Chamber.
