The glide bombs Russians devastate Ukrainian positions, killing civilians, as happened in the last few hours Kharkhiv, targeted by a raid where an Umpb D-30 would have been used. “It’s a cross between a guided bomb and a missile,” explained Oleh Synehubov, governor of the Kharkiv oblast where tonight one person died and 16 others were injured. “A sort of flying bomb that the Russians decided to test on citizens.”
The invaders began using these devices in early 2023, transforming traditional bombs into more precise systems with the addition of a guide kit and flaps. They are launched by fighters flying 40-50 kilometers away from the front line, sheltered from Ukraine’s anti-aircraft apparatus. AND their impact has grown exponentiallywith hundreds – perhaps thousands of “gliders” – fired against different objectives, in particular the positions on the front line.
A choice due to three reasons: they are a low-cost solution as older weapons are often reconverted; they have considerable power; they represent an alternative to missiles. To the ammunition lying in the depots the “pieces” produced at a high rate by the national industry were added: in addition to the FAB500 and 1500, the three-ton 3000 version would be ready. According to observers, during the battles of recent months, the hammering with these devices proved to be very effectiveperhaps also because the protective structures were not sufficient to withstand such harsh blows.
Kiev, in fact, has decided to provide its troops with new defenses, called upon to counter possible offensives until the summer. President Volodymyr himself Zelensky carried out an inspection during which he visited bunkers, deep trenches, concrete constructions made by engineers. There are also many dragon’s teeth – always concrete obstacles – scattered in front of the positions to act as obstacles. The visit was documented with the release of videos and photos precisely for this purpose highlight the importance of countermeasures that should have been created much earlier.
The Ukrainians, waiting for a sustained resumption of Western aid, are multiplying efforts to improve local arms production and look for simple solutions.
