5 things that aren’t working very well in The Boys 4

We thought we had seen them all but then Sister Sage arrived in The Boys, one of the best things up to this point in Season 4. Which however is also giving rise to some problems in the management of some storylines, let’s see at least 5 of them.

To begin the characterization of Starlight this season is not up to the previous ones: the character of Annie, over the years, has faced a great journey of self-revaluation, first freeing herself from her mother’s pre-conceptions, and finally finding the courage to face Vaught head on open and to expose himself against Patriota. In this season, for now, however, we find her too trapped in the role of political activism, not very combative and rather impulsive, as demonstrated by her action against Firecracker.

The subplot featuring Frenchie instead seems mostly filler, since already in the previous season we saw the consequences of his previous life as a hitman for the Russian mafia. It is to be hoped that this storyline will lead him to an actual epiphany, as well as a turning point in his relationship with Kimiko.

Always identified as a comic sidekick, Abisso should perhaps move away from the role of a caricature and do something really relevant, since his character doesn’t seem to have much to say anymore other than getting a few laughs for his excesses of stupidity.

Victoria Neumann, however, seems far from her status as an invisible and invulnerable threat, which gave the impression that heads could explode at any moment. The character is clearly in a delicate moment in her storyline, torn between her affection for Hughie and the advantages of a political alliance with Homelander. But perhaps she was preferred in the role of loose cannon: let’s see how she will evolve further.

Finally there is the Butcher node: it’s not, in truth, something that “doesn’t work” in the strict sense, but it remains to be understood if and how the series will lead us towards its farewell. Will Billy really die, consumed by the cancer that is tearing him apart? Or will he find a way to save himself? How to manage the fate of one of the fundamental pivots of this series: it is undoubtedly the most delicate question of all.
