Goku’s death along with Raditz
Even though Dragon Ball had already inserted death into its narrative, seeing Goku succumb was definitely shocking.

He is a warrior from the future who has returned to the past to save the world from the disturbing threat of the Androids. Super Buu suddenly raises the tension
In the Buu Saga, Gotenks gives the illusion of being able to defeat the enemy when he transforms into Super Saiyan 3. Unfortunately, things go wrong and Super Buu, with great cunning, absorbs his opponent and takes over his powers.
After getting Goten and Trunks out of the way, Super Buu manages to incorporate even Ultimate Gohan and Vegettodestroying (even if only apparently) the residual hopes of the human race.
