BRUSSELS No presumption of innocence for the Greek Eva Kaili, arrested in Brussels as part of the investigation into the corruption of European officials linked to Qatar: the vice president of the EU Parliament (there are fourteen) yesterday evening she was expelled from Pasok, the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, by decision of President Nikos Androulakis. And to follow also from the S&D group of the Eurochamber with immediate effect, in response to the ongoing investigations.
Before turning to politics Kaili, 44 years oldwas a television journalist for the Greek broadcaster Mega Channel until she was elected to the Greek Parliament in 2007 where she remained for the entire term. Her partner, Francesco Giorgi, was Antonio Panzeri’s former parliamentary assistant in the last legislature. Both were stopped. The bond with Panzeri remained strong even after his formal exit from the Eurochamber. It is no secret in Brussels that his election as vice president was also favored by the support of the socialists who remained close to Panzeri.
