Two tourists died in the accident in the Alba area, the driver of the car (husband of one of the victims) was drunk: arrested

The driver of the Audi A5 which went off the road yesterday afternoon (Wednesday 17 April) in Vezza d’Alba, in a tragic accident which caused the death of two German tourists aged 35 and 32, has been arrested for aggravated vehicular homicide. The 36-year-old man, hospitalized in non-serious conditions at the Verduno hospital, underwent tests, he was found to have a blood alcohol level of 1.7 grams per litre, more than three times the legal limit. He is now guarded by the Carabinieri of the Alba Company, at the disposal of the Asti Prosecutor’s Office which coordinates the investigations. A second man was also traveling on board the car, also 36 years old, German of Afghan origins, hospitalized with a reserved prognosis at the Santa Croce hospital in Cuneo.

They were two couples of friends, husbands and wives. They were in the Alba area for the honeymoon of one of the couples, the one which included the man hospitalized in Cuneo who received the news of the tragedy last night from a native German-speaking interpreter.

According to the military’s reconstruction, the driver was traveling at high speed and in a state of intoxication along provincial road 287 together with three friends, when he lost control of the car at number 20 of the Val Rubiagno Region. The car, run amok, flew over the roadway to the left and, bouncing off a low concrete structure overlooking the ditch on the side of the road, ended up in a courtyard. The Audi A5 literally took off, flew over the ground for over fifty metres, broke through the hedge of a house on the edge of the provincial road, also felling a tree, and then finished its mad dash in the courtyard of the house. The two women, who were traveling in the back seats, died instantly.

Since January the death toll on the streets of Granda has been alarming: 12 deaths have already been recorded, of which nine motorists, a motorcyclist, the driver of a tractor and a pedestrian. To these data must be added the tragedies that affected two other families: two people who were residents in the province of Cuneo and died outside of Granda. In 2023, from January to March, there were “only” 4 accident victims, 7 at the end of April. The year then ended with 29 deaths, the “best” figure in the last 24 years.
