It was October 19, 2018 when the rossoblù president Tommaso Giuliniin an interview with the newspaper Tuttosport, expressed his personal desire: “I would like a Cagliari Bilbao model. We live in a unique reality and the fans must understand that the kids on our island must always be helped“. Five and a half years later the goal still appears distantas revealed by the latest report from the CIES Observatory.

“Territorial anchorage index“, this is the name of the Observatory’s weekly post. That is, the proportion of national players and those who grew up in individual clubs compared to those who played in the relevant championships. Leading the CIES ranking at a global level is, unsurprisingly, theAthletic Club Bilbao with 100% Spanish footballers and the 62% of elements who grew up in the Basque club. Players are considered “national” when they grow up in the same federation as the club, while “club-grown” players are those who have played for at least three seasons among the 15 and 21 years old of age in the team. In this second case the “non-national” elements are not considered, therefore in the case of Cagliari it is not part of the analysis, for example, the Angolan Zito Luvumbo. At a global level, the rossoblù are behind in the rankings, while considering the five major European leagues (Italy, Spain, England, Germany and France) they stand at fifty-second place. In detail, Cagliari presents an index of 33.9 – Bilbao in the lead with 100. Index which is made up of the two reference values, i.e. the use for the 53% Of national players and for the 6% Of elements that grew up in the club.
Looking at the alone A league Claudio Ranieri’s rossoblù are at seventh place. A ranking led byEmpoli with an index of 39.9, then Monza, Frosinone, Fiorentina, Juventus and Atalanta. Udinese closes the table with an index of just 9 points. Analyzing the two different reference values instead, Cagliari is fourth for the use of national players with the aforementioned 53%, always preceded by Empoli with 59%, Frosinone with 63% and Monza with 64%, while as regards the players who grew up in the club the rossoblù are with 6% pereleventh place in Serie A, with Atalanta leading with 27%.
