AutoScout24: Used car prices down compared to 2023. Volkswagen Golf most sought after

Autoscout24 analyzed the used car market, in May 2024 there was a drop in the average price of used cars compared to the same period in 2023. Diesel and electric cars fell in particular (-11.8%). The most sought-after used car is the Volkswagen Golf.

This is the data collected by the Autoscout24 AGPI index which, going into detail, analyses the situation of the used market:

• The drop in second-hand prices and the digital market are an opportunity for those who want to buy a new generation car. In fact, on AutoScout24, over 50% of the used cars present are Euro 6.
• Compared to a year ago, in May the drop in prices was more limited for petrol cars (-3.5%). Since the beginning of the year, the only foods to increase are hybrids (+3%).
• The Volkswagen Golf It is the most sought-after used car overall, followed by the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and the Panda. Among the hybrids, the Toyota Yaris and C-HR are in first place, while among the electrics, the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.

According to the AutoScout24 AGPI Index, which measures the prices of used cars for sale on the portal, the average price decline (€21,640) continued for the sixth consecutive month in May 2024, marking -2% since the beginning of the year and -5.6% compared to May of last year. If we consider the month of November, where average prices reached their highest value since 2019 (€23,090), the decline is -6.3%. Among the most sought-after used cars, the Volkswagen Golf wins overall, followed by the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and the Fiat Panda. Among the hybrids, the Toyota Yaris and C-HR are in first place, while among the electrics, the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.

But what is the trend recorded among the different diets?

Compared to last May, this year the prices of cars on sale for the various fuel systems are all decreasing, but with significantly higher values ​​for diesel and electric vehicles, both with -11.8%. Petrol cars (-3.5%) and hybrids (-5.2%) “hold up” better. Since the beginning of the year, in contrast to other fuels, the prices of hybrids have increased by +3%.

The drop in used car prices, especially for diesel and electric cars, marks an opportunity for those who plan to buy a used car in the coming months, given that there is a vast offer of new-generation cars on the digital market: on AutoScout24, in fact, over 50% of the used cars present are Euro 6.

Prices for food

In May, the average price of a used electric car was €28,735, down -11.8% compared to the same period last year and -5.2% compared to the beginning of the year.

Shifting attention to hybrids, the average price of used cars was €34,185, down -5% compared to the same period last year but up 3% compared to the beginning of the year, the only positive fuel.

When it comes to petrol, however, in May the average cost almost reached €22,290, down by -3.5% compared to the same period last year and by -2.9% compared to the beginning of the year.

Finally, the average price of a used diesel car was €18,755, down -11.8% compared to the same period last year (the highest among fuels together with electric) and -4.8% compared to the beginning of the year.

How much does price trends influence the choices of Italians?

According to AutoScout24, from January to May the Volkswagen Golf is the most requested car on the portal, followed by the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and the timeless Fiat Panda.

We therefore have diesel and petrol cars at the top of the list, with the Fiat Panda, Fiat 500 and Volkswagen Golf, while among the diesels the winners are the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, once again the Volkswagen Golf and the BMW 1 Series. In the hybrid category, the podium is populated by the Toyota Yaris and C-HR, together with the Fiat 500. Among the electric cars, as usual, the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are the most popular, followed by the brand new Smart ForTwo.
