President Zaia celebrates the anniversary of the Marmolada tragedy, underlining the heroic commitment of the rescuers and the importance of remembering the victims.

VENICE – “Every 3 July, the pain and anguish caused by the Marmolada tragedy resurfaces. I find myself remembering the frantic phone calls, the timely intervention of SUEM 118, the helicopters and the Alpine Rescue teams, combined with the extraordinary efforts of the Fire Brigade, the SAGF of the Guardia di Finanza and all the forces of law and order and Civil Protection. It was an extremely difficult rescue operation, under the threat of further collapses, on a day of exceptional heat for those altitudes. In the din of the rescue efforts, the pain for the victims was immediately felt. The detachment of the Marmolada glacier marked an event that left an indelible mark, burying eleven lives under a mass of ice and rocks who were seeking the fulfillment of their sporting passion on the mountain or simply the beauty of a sunny day at high altitude, surrounded by the majesty of the Dolomites. Two years later, the pain shared with the families and friends of the victims resurfaces, along with the admiration for the work and spirit of sacrifice shown by all the rescuers. I renew my closeness to them, and to them goes my deep gratitude”.

With these words, Luca ZaiaPresident of the Veneto Region, commemorates the anniversary of the Marmolada tragedy of 3 July 2022, when a section of the summit of the glacier broke away, causing the tragic accident.

The Governor continued: “Our region suffered the most serious loss that day, with eight Venetians losing their lives: Philip Bari, Thomas Carollo, Paul Dani, Nicholas Zavatta, Davide Miotti, Erika Campagnaro, Gianmarco Gallina e Manuela Piran. In their memory, it is our duty to strengthen the awareness that tackling the mountains with passion must always be accompanied by an awareness of the risks of an unpredictable environment, where even the clearest day can hide unexpected dangers of great magnitude. This tragedy reminds us that our mountains are not untouchable places to be admired only from afar, but environments of great fragility that always require our attention”.

“On that 3rd of July two years ago, personnel from different organizations in Veneto and the Autonomous Province of Trento worked together, demonstrating that there are no administrative borders that can divide the cohesion of the spirit of solidarity,” concluded President Zaia. “On this anniversary too, the Veneto Region joins all those who work in mountain rescue operations. Extraordinary men and women, who courageously conduct extraordinary operations, saving many lives every year. On this day, it is right to address them with a thought of profound gratitude.”
