What happened
The car, a Peugeot, was traveling northbound on the road when the young driver saw smoke coming from the engine compartment. The woman immediately stopped and, in fear, got out of the car. At that very moment, firefighter Vincenzo Siciliano, from Patù, was passing by, off duty at the time. The firefighter immediately stopped and approached the car to try to secure it. First he tried to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher. Then he noticed that a cement mixer used to transport concrete was approaching: he immediately called the driver’s attention, asking him to stop, and with the water pump used to wash the vehicle he put out the flames. In the meantime, the firefighters from the Gallipoli detachment arrived on the scene, who continued to secure the vehicle and the state road, which is particularly busy at this time of year. The Carabinieri from the Casarano company also intervened. They were moments of great fear, especially for the driver of the car, but thanks to the intervention of the young firefighter everything was resolved for the best.
