The cultural offer in Milan is enriched with a new visit itinerary to the battlements of the Sforzesco Castle: and Today in fact the Climb to the Merlate Panoramiche will be open to the public and can be used independently, without having to book a guided tour, by purchasing a dedicated ticket.

The battlements were the soldiers’ patrol walkways and had the function of allowing constant monitoring of the security status of the Castle, which at the time of the Sforza family it was a military fortress, as well as a ducal residence.

Il section of the walkway made accessible by the Municipality of Milan – Sforza Castlein collaboration with the educational services concessionaires Ad Artem and CoopCulture, will now allow a new individual visit experience, which will be added to the guided tour proposals already active.

The Panoramic Battlements are accessed from the staircase of the Rocchetta Courtyard (over one hundred steps, with the possibility of taking the lift up for people with walking difficulties and strollers) until you reach the top floor of the Treasure Tower. From there, the route winds along the three sides of the Rocchetta – the most inaccessible part of the Sforzesco Castle: starting from the northwest side, towards Sempione Parkthen continue counterclockwise to the south-west, towards the city centre and the Duomo.

The route lasts approximately 40 minutes and will be accessible to groups of up to 25 people. (every 20 minutes) from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10am to 5pm, after purchasing the ticket online on the website of the Civic Museums of Milan or at the dedicated ticket office at the Info Point of the Castello Sforzesco.

The climb to the Panoramic Battlements will allow visitors to discover the defensive system and admire the urban skyline from multiple points of viewrecognizing the most significant places, and at the same time understand the complex and fascinating structure of the Sforza Castle.

A series of descriptive panels accompanies the route: historical notes, details on the Sforza defense systems, curiosities and information on visible points of interest are highlighted. In particular, the panels tell the visitor the history of the Sforza Castle and the various elements of its defence system.: from the ancient wall of the Ghirlanda, to the Rivellino di Santo Spirito, up to the loopholes, the machicolations and the battlements. There is no shortage of references to the legends that have made the Castle famous and references to the many points of interest of the medieval and modern city, from the Cathedral to the Unicredit Towerfrom the Bell Tower of San Gottardo in Corte to the Bosco Verticale, up to the buildings of Giovanni Muzio and Gio Ponti and the CityLife Towers, embracing with the gaze the transformation of the cityfrom the ancient medieval grid to the contemporary city.
