Death of Islam Miah. Brother Speaks Out: “We Want the Truth”

Now it is Noralom Miah who speaks, following the death of his brother Islam on Tuesday. He hit his head after falling from a scaffold while working inside a Fincantieri ship for the Sait company on Monday. «On June 10th I broke two ribs – says Noralom – I collapsed on a gangway while I was going to paint a ship. Fourteen days later I lost Islam. What else needs to happen to my family?”.

Noralom, a 36-year-old Bangladeshi – two years older than Islam – is also a worker. That morning at 7:25, it was raining. There were four of them in the team and he was the leader. They gave them the materials and they set off along the gangway to reach the area of the ship they had to paint. At a certain point, a grate opened under his feet, the ones that let rainwater in, and he fell down to his torso. He managed to avoid falling completely, by 10-15 meters and to save himself thanks to the strength of his legs, by putting his feet on end. But in the meantime, he broke two ribs and at the emergency room they gave him twenty days for the injury.

For this reason, Noralom was not at work on Monday and that evening he was called by colleagues and Islam Miah’s father-in-law, who told him about his brother’s accident. He was not able to run directly to him to go and see him. However, he kept in touch with his colleagues. “After the fall at 6:20 p.m. they told me that Islam was taken to the Fincantieri infirmary. He had lost consciousness. He was not recovering. They assisted him, based on what I know, and at 9 p.m. he went to the Angelo. I wonder why all this time was wasted. During the evening I was not able to go to the hospital, but anyway – continues Noralom Miah – The compatriots who were with him informed me, telling me around 2 a.m. that he was sleeping. The next morning the doctors told my father-in-law to get someone who understood Italian well. When we found her and I arrived at the hospital, around 12:15, the medical workers explained to us that Islam had been disconnected from the machines shortly before. The trauma to his head had caused him to be brain dead and I was shocked.”

Noralom learns that after the fall, Islam never regained consciousness that evening, so much so that she wonders if her brother was already dead when they tried to revive him. The equipment he was connected to perhaps kept him alive as long as his heart continued to beat: that is, at around 11:30 on Tuesday 25 June. Now Miah’s brother is asking for everything to be clarified: the time of death and the assistance at the infirmary. “If the ambulance had arrived immediately and my brother had gone to the Angelo immediately, could he have been saved? Why did so much time pass before the transfer?” All questions that Noralom has entrusted to the lawyers of the Mazzini Group of Padua. “I ask for clarification not only for Islam, but for everyone, and that what happened to me never happens to anyone again.”
